Winter is a fading memory, and we’ll soon be reaching for that air con button when the sun decides to make an appearance.

But after months of hibernation, you might be in for a shock when you try to turn down the heat in your van or car.

It can be easy to neglect the air con system during the festive months, especially when all you want is warmth and not a chill, but ignoring it for a season or more can lead to some unwanted surprises: weak airflow, bad smells, and dodgy components.

The good news is, with a few simple steps, you can make sure the air con is in top shape BEFORE the summer heat wave (hopefully) arrives.

Here's our six top tips:

1. Does it look OK?

That might sound obvious, but the first step is give it a quick visual inspection.

Check the exterior for any visible damage or debris it might have picked up and fix any potential problems.

You also need to clear away any junk that might have accumulated. Those leaves and dirt need to go for a fully-functioning air con.

2. How are the levels?

It’s a simple equation: low levels = low cooling ability.

A clear sign that your refrigerant levels are low is when your air con isn’t cooling as it should, and if that's the case, you don't want to find out on the warmest day of the year.

Your vehicle’s manual can help you find the levels, and if they are low, especially if they are lower than expected, there could be a leak or some other issue that might be best fixed at a garage.

3. Have you tested it?

Testing it is quick and easy. Just start your engine and whack up the air con to its highest setting.

Listen out for any unusual noises that could indicate a bigger problem. Rattling or squealing could signal an issue with the compressor or some other components.

What about the airflow from the vents? If it's weak, it could be a sign of a clogged air filter or obstruction. If in doubt about any of these issues, its best to get it checked and fixed by a pro.

4. What about the cabin air filter?

The air filter in the cabin is a crucial component in keeping the vehicle chilled.

It can become clogged over time with dust and pollen, which will not only reduce the airflow but can also cause some strange smells.

As with the levels, check your vehicle’s manual if you need help finding and replacing it, and if it’s a job that hasn't been done in a while, you might notice a big improvement in both the temperature and the air quality.

5. Have you checked the belts and hoses?

It's important not to overlook the belts and coolant hoses connected to your vehicle’s air con system.

If you spot any signs of damage, such as cracks, fraying, or excessive wear, they need to be checked and possibly replaced.

Signs of wear and tear might not mean an imminent malfunction, but as with everything else that keeps your van or car running smoothly, it’s best to be address any issues sooner rather than later.

6. Finally… run it regularly!

Yes, even during the chilly winter months, your air con needs to be turned on now and then to keep it in great condition.

Also, now that you’ve done the hard work of checking everything is in working order, it pays to switch it on throughout the year to help with circulation and to keep the moving parts in tip top shape.

Ideally, you should aim to run the air con for at least 10 minutes every few weeks - yes, even if it’s icy cool outside.
